The Double Negative: Finding Disaffected, Persuadable Voters

More than 9 million voters nationwide are identified as disaffected with both major political parties, creating a growing challenge for traditional approaches to voter targeting and persuasion. The 2026 Double Negative Model, developed by New River Strategies, Patinkin Research Strategies, and Innovating for the Public Good, offers a new way to identify these voters at the individual level.

In this PSG Consulting Conversation, Page Gardner is joined by Ben Lazarus and Benjy Messner to examine the research behind the model, which was developed using nearly 10,000 survey interviews and tested against multiple measures of partisan identity, party attitudes, cynicism, and political disaffection. The discussion looks at who these voters are, how the model identifies them, and what the research reveals about their demographic and political characteristics.

The presenters also explain how the model can be used alongside existing targeting tools to expand persuasion and mobilization universes. With an average of approximately 52,000 double-negative voters identified per targeted congressional district, the webinar offers a practical look at how campaigns and organizations can find and reach voters who may otherwise be missed by conventional models.
